Canada Pushed Back — But the Authoritarian Threat Isn’t Over

Canada just reminded us what resistance can look like — even in the face of a rising global tide of authoritarianism.
Yesterday, voters delivered a fourth consecutive term to the Liberal Party under Prime Minister Mark Carney. The far-right Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, fell short.
And while the Liberals didn’t secure a full majority, they did win enough seats — about 162, just 10 shy of the 172 needed — to form a strong minority government.
This wasn’t just a national win. It was a global signal: the spread of Trumpism, Christian nationalism, and MAGA-style fascism can be stopped at the ballot box.
Because let’s be clear — this wasn’t a normal election.
It was a referendum on whether Canadian democracy could hold the line under pressure from imported disinformation, American economic bullying, and the rise of far-right extremism bleeding across borders.
And thanks to Canadian voters, it did.
A Rejection of the MAGA Playbook
Poilievre’s campaign leaned hard into the same tactics we’ve seen infect U.S. politics: demonize journalists, blame immigrants, fuel white resentment, and call it “freedom.”
But Canadians didn’t fall for it.
Instead, turnout surged in key districts where people understood the stakes — not just for their country, but for the future of democracy itself.
This wasn’t just a vote against Poilievre. It was a vote against the global fascist playbook that’s been rewritten and exported by Trump and his allies — from Florida to Alberta.
But Let’s Not Get Comfortable
This win matters — but it’s not the end of the fight.
Carney and the Liberals will now be governing with a minority, meaning they’ll have to negotiate constantly with other parties to move anything forward.
That opens the door to obstruction, sabotage, and continued right-wing pressure — both at home and from U.S. forces still itching to see Canada fall in line with their authoritarian vision.
We can’t pretend this was a knockout blow. It was a narrow save.
The far-right is still organizing. Still seeding division. Still watching, waiting, and learning how to do better next time.
The Fight is Borderless. So is Our Solidarity.
Canada’s election proves that people can resist — but they have to be ready, organized, and clear-eyed about what they’re up against.
We need to take this momentum and bring it home.
Because here in the U.S., we’re not just dealing with creeping authoritarianism — we’re living under it.
Trump is still making global threats and grooming state leaders to follow his example.
The Christian nationalist right is busy stacking courts, rigging systems, and rewriting history.
And in states like Florida and Texas, the line between government and fascist movement is gone entirely.
What Canada just did was remind us that resistance is possible.
That disinformation can be beaten.
That fascism is not inevitable.
But only if we keep organizing.
Only if we stay loud, clear, and absolutely unapologetic in rejecting every form of right-wing extremism — from the pulpit to the platform.
This isn’t over.
Not by a long shot.
But for now — Canada, thank you. You gave us a glimpse of what courage at the polls looks like.
